Abstract

Traditional metallic alloys have consisted of the mixture of a majority element with other elements in smaller proportions, which act as solutes in the crystalline structure of the main element improving the properties of the base metal. In steel, much smaller carbon atoms are inserted into the interstitial holes of the iron microstructure. Although the properties of pure elements are improved, alloys still maintain certain properties derived from the majority element.
