Abstract

Carrying out a restoration intervention requires a complete preliminary study and, in the building construction field, it is essential to perform tests for the characterization and identification of materials. In this paper, the importance of this initial survey phase is highlighted, so that justified decisions can be made leading to the appropriate prescription of corrective or mitigation actions where appropriate. Following the intervention carried out in the garden Pavillion of the Cerralbo Museum (listed as Building of Cultural Interest ) located in Madrid, the analysis techniques in the field of restoration or rehabilitation are displayed. Results show evidences that the use of these techniques allows to identify, in a precise and effective way the nature of the materials. In addition, the methodological process proposed for each case study is confirmed to be the one that better adjusts to the data obtained through the traditional characterization techniques (SEM, XRD, MOP), which helps in taking decisions when performing a restoration intervention work in built heritage.
