Abstract

The renewal of public lighting installations is on the increase in an attempt to make them more energy efficient. However, the methodologies used are lacking in information on relevant issues and do not allow knowing the savings potential of any existing installation. The aim of this work is to propose a methodology that will enable the potential energy savings for any existing street lighting installation to be known as well as the environmental protection and safety conditions, by studying the various renewal proposals so that in each case the most appropriate one can be implemented, depending on the cost of the investment, the return period, the expected duration of the concession, etc. The proposed methodology requires a complete audit that includes verification of the facility's safety conditions, the road classification and lighting measurements, analysis of the information obtained, energy consumption and CO2 emissions and an analysis of the night-time brightness. With this information the factors on which to act can be identified (light levels, installation components, light pollution, etc.) in order to implement the various facility renewal proposals and know the possibilities of offsetting the renewal costs against the energy savings achieved. Keywords: Public lighting, energy audit, energy efficiency.
