Abstract

One reason for the high number of accidents that occur each year in the industrial sector is the lack of effectiveness in the prevention of accidents of currently available Passive Safety Features (PSF) in the industrial safety market. Taking as reference the success of effectiveness improvement of several active safety devices developed in recent years in the automotive sector, this paper presents a novel acting protocol for industrial machinery for active safety purposes.Based on image analysis as recorded by a Computer Vision System (CVS), this protocol allows real-time detection of ccupational hazards in the industrial machine environment. In order to demonstrate its proper operation, we provide a test on a combined asma/oxy-fuel cutting machine. By using appropriate switches and actuators, this protocol is able to avoid occupational accidents such as entrapment, cut or burn, which could cause death to the user of this type of industrial machinery.
