Abstract

It has been 25 years since the publication of the two works, by Davenport and Short and by Hammer, that set the grounds of Business Process Reengineering (BPR) and triggered a revolution in business management. Taking the seminal works as starting point, we present a retrospective view of the development of BPR; we analyze its evolution and controversial issues in order to find its conceptual keys. We then analyze some basic reference conceptual frameworks that have been extensively used to classify business process changes enabled by Information Technologies (IT). Conceptual essence of BPR still holds practical interest. Nevertheless, it becomes necessary to redefine the conceptual framework of IT-enabled process changes, particularly when the digital era brings a new wave of industrial process changes. Key Words: business process reengineering, business process redesign, business process change, information technology
