Abstract

In this work, we attempt to offer a general view of the demography of the villages and countries, which belong to what we conventionally define as the Pyrenees. This is an area that with different intensities in different conjunctures, has experienced a dramatic population fall throughout the 20th century. In the last decade, however, and in the first years of the new century, changes in these negative demographic dynamics can be detected. These changes result in turn from modifications of the socio-economic functions which part of the villages in the Pyrenees fulfil in Spanish society. The powers that draw these new trends are, basically, the ombination of residential and touristic functions, which will be developed now by some of those villages.
