ABSTRACT
The acquisition of skills in ICT (Information and Communication
Technologies) has a relevant role in the training programs of educational
institutions, since these skills are among the most demanded when companies
decide to look for workers. For this reason, this study aims to analyze the
training in ICT skills that the students of the Faculty of Business Sciences
and Tourism of the University of Huelva (Spain) possess according to their
professors and the importance that these professors give to their acquisition
for the future professional performance of their students, and observe if these
two variables differ from the opinion of the students, to know if corrective
measures should be taken in the training programs when transmitting said
skills. This research is carried out through a questionnaire carried out to 46
professors of said Faculty and concludes that, in general, the study plans have
been able to promote the learning of these ICT skills and to relativize the
acquisition of these for the future job performance of their students.

1. Introduction
One of the points where more emphasis is made from educational
institutions in their training programs and from teachers in their subject
programs is on the acquisition of skills in ICT (Information and Communication
Technologies), and this is due to that students, once they finish their studies
and begin to practice in the world of work, require in most cases technological
tools to perform many of their functions.
For this reason, limiting this research to this problem in universities
and in their training programs, this study has as its main objective to analyze
the importance that teachers give to the acquisition of ICT skills for the
future professional performance of their students and the domain that They feel
that their students have about these, and observe if they differ from the
opinion of the students, to know if this importance and dominance in these
competences that teachers want to transmit to their students are received in a
correct way. For this specific case, this is analyzed in the Faculty of Business
Sciences and Tourism of the University of Huelva (Spain), where the degrees of
"Business Administration and Management", "Finance and
Accounting" and "Tourism" are taught.
Next, the importance of ICT skills in the labor market and in the
training programs of educational institutions is contextualized.
The acquisition of ICT skills is one of the essential requirements in the
training programs of educational institutions and in the programs of their
subjects, including both the learning of ICT tools and the use of these for the
learning process, since that their students must make use of these competencies
to perform many of their functions in the labor market (Abad-Segura,
González-Zamar, Infante-Moro & Ruipérez García, 2020; Peirats Chacón,
Rodríguez Rodríguez & San Martín Alonso, 2019; Fuentes, Albertos &
Torrano, 2019; González-González et al., 2019; Prendes Espinosa,
Román García & González Calatayud, 2019; González-González, Guzmán-Franco
& Infante-Moro, 2019; Blas Padilla, Vázquez-Cano, Morales Cevallos &
López Meneses, 2019; Sánchez González, 2019; Tejero, 2019; González de Escalada
Álvarez, 2019; López-García & Miralles Martínez, 2018; Creer, 2018;
Fernández, Leiva & López, 2017).
The functions and tasks that are computerized in companies are countless:
billing, accounting, treasury management, inventory management, cost
accounting, human resources management, payroll, budget accounting, customer
management, ... And this means that there are also countless computer tools
that the workers of these companies must use, some more general: spreadsheets,
word processing, databases, ..., and others more specific according to the area
of work: invoices, payroll and computerized accounting, TPS, ERP,
… (Infante-Moro, Infante-Moro, Martínez-López & García-Ordaz, 2015).
This context has been prompted by the need to incorporate automated
information systems in companies to optimize their operation (Guevara, 2004),
since the increase in the volume of information used in companies makes them
impossible to manage without these tools (Lam & McKercher, 2013), extending
their use to all their departments.
In this way, it is easy to understand that some of the competences
demanded by companies when looking for workers are ICT competencies and that
educational institutions have had to include them in the development of their
training programs as competencies to acquire (Infante-Moro, Infante-Moro,
Martínez-López & García-Ordaz, 2016).
The latter has been the subject of study for many researchers, as
commented at the beginning of this point, but many other researchers have
focused their studies on what are the digital competences and competences that
the business sector really demands and how they can be acquired (Infante-Moro,
Infante-Moro & Gallardo-Pérez, 2020; Cabero Almenara & Martínez Gimeno,
2019; Beltrán Hernández de Galindo & Ramírez-Montoya, 2019; Casillas
Martín, Cabezas González & García Peñalvo, 2019; Ávalos, Pérez-Escoda &
Monge, 2019; Fernández‐Batanero, Cabero & López,
2019; Rodríguez-García, Cáceres Reche & Alonso García, 2018).
This process of acquisition of digital skills by students has been
promoted and reinforced, in addition, with the inclusion of technological tools
in the teaching process, since there are many ICT tools attached to this
process: tele-training platforms (Morales Salas, Infante-Moro &
Gallardo-Pérez, 2020, 2019; Sánchez-López, Pérez-Rodríguez & Fandos-Igado,
2019; Cornellà Canals & Estebanell Minguell, 2018), MOOCs (García-Peñalvo,
Fidalgo-Blanco & Sein-Echaluce, 2018; Bournissen, Tumino & Carrión,
2018; Duart, Roig-Vila, Mengual-Andres & Maseda, 2017), intelligent
tutorial systems (Pedroza, González, Guerrero, Collazos & Lecona, 2018),
serious games (González Calleros, Guerrero García & Navarro Rangel, 2019),
online social networks (León-Gómez, Calderón-Garrido & Gil-Fernández, 2019;
González Pérez, 2018; Puertas-Hidalgo & Carpio-Jiménez, 2017; Torres-Diaz
et al., 2015), virtual simulators (Puebla Sánchez & Temiño Aguirre, 2018;
Guzmán Duque & del Moral Pérez, 2018),… which have provided skills when it
comes to coping with these technologies.
In this way, this article tries to analyze the domain of the students of
the Faculty of Business Sciences and Tourism of the University of Huelva
(Spain) on these ICT skills according to their teachers and the importance that
these teachers give to the acquisition of these skills. for the future
professional performance of their students, checking whether or not they are at
the level that is required from the labor market in these, and knowing if this
importance and mastery in these skills that teachers want to transmit to their
students coincide with the importance that Students give to the acquisition of
these competences and to their mastery, checking if corrective measures should
be taken.
2. Methodology
The instrument
used to capture the data in this study is the survey, an instrument that allows
to achieve the proposed objectives when working with quantitative and empirical
data.
The questionnaire used in this survey is extracted from the study “Design
and validation of an instrument for evaluating the digital competence of the
university student” (Gutiérrez Castillo, Cabero Almenara & Estrada Vidal,
2017) and is made up of 43 items, with evaluative questions in base ten and
without identification variables (which helps to avoid the absence of answers).
In this aforementioned study, the process of construction of this
questionnaire, its psychometric characteristics and its validity for the study
and evaluation of technological competences in students are developed and
analyzed. This was constructed taking as a reference the indicators proposed in
the NETS*S Project (ISTE, 2007), developed by the International Society for
Tecnology in Education (ISTE), and ratified by means of the expert judgment
technique, delivered to 17 teachers in the area of Educational
Technology belonging to Spanish and Latin American universities who evaluated
the questionnaire and verified that it met the necessary psychometric
characteristics of validity and reliability.
In this way, the development of this questionnaire allows to analyze:
Technological literacy, observing if they understand and use information
and communication technology systems (items 01, 02 and 03), if they select and
use applications effectively and productively (items 04, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 ),
if they investigate and solve problems in systems and applications (item 05),
and if they transfer existing knowledge to ICT learning (items 11 and 12).
The search and treatment of information, observing if they plan
strategies that guide the investigation (item 13), if they locate, organize,
analyze, evaluate, synthesize and use information from a variety of sources and
means (item 18), if they evaluate and select information sources and digital
tools to carry out specific tasks (items 14 and 15), and if they process data
and communicate results (items 16 and 17).
Critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, observing if they
identify and define authentic problems and significant questions to investigate
(item 19), if they plan and administer the activities necessary to develop a
solution or complete a project (item 20), whether they collect and analyze data
to identify solutions and / or make informed decisions (item 21), and whether
they use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative
solutions (item 22).
Communication and collaboration, observing if they interact, collaborate
and publish with colleagues or other people, using a variety of environments
and digital media (items 23, 26, 29, 30 and 31), if they effectively
communicate information and ideas to multiple audiences, using a variety of
media and formats (items 24 and 28), if they develop cultural understanding and
global awareness by linking with students from other cultures (item 25), and if
they participate in teams that develop projects to produce original works or
solve problems (item 27).
Digital citizenship, observing if they promote and practice the safe,
legal and responsible use of information and ICT (items 32, 33 and 34), if they
exhibit a positive attitude towards the use of ICT to support collaboration,
learning and productivity (item 37), and if they exercise leadership for
digital citizenship (items 35 and 36).
And creativity and innovation, observing if they apply existing knowledge
to generate new ideas, products or processes (items 38, 39, 40), if they create
original works as means of personal or group expression (item 43), and if they
identify trends and they foresee possibilities (items 41 and 42).
But in this research, it will not be the students who analyze the domain
they have over ICT competences, but it will be their teachers who analyze the
domain that their students have over these competences. In addition to finding,
through its completion, the importance that teachers give to the acquisition by
students of these ICT skills for their future professional career, adding an
extra column to request such information.
In this way, the development of this survey is carried out during the
month of April 2018 to 46 professors from the Faculty of Business Sciences and
Tourism of the University of Huelva, where the degrees of "Business
Administration and Management" are taught, "Finance and Accounting”
and “Tourism”, and the validation and verification that there are no confusions
in the interpretation of their questions is previously done through 5 “pilot
surveys” of 5 teachers, after which no modifications were required.
The size of the sample is determined with the probability formula for
defined populations, which allows reaching the number of responses necessary
for the results to be significant at the academic level.
Z2
x N x p x q
n
= —————————— = 46
E²(N-1)
+ Z2 x p x q
Where: n = Sample size;
Confidence level = 95.5%; Z = 2; N = Frame size = 84 teachers; E = Margin of
error = 10% = 0.1; p and q = Are the variances of the population = 0.5.
And once these data are obtained, they are compared with those obtained
by the students of the same Faculty in that same year for that questionnaire
(Infante-Moro, Infante-Moro & Gallardo-Pérez, 2019), allowing to observe if
there are significant differences in the dominance that these students have
over ICT skills according to their opinions or those of their teachers, and if
the importance that teachers give to the acquisition by the students of these
ICT skills for their future professional career with respect to ICT differs
significantly to student opinion.
3. Results
The results are analyzed using descriptive statistics (means), which
allows us to see if there are differences between the mastery that students of
this Faculty have of ICT skills according to their teachers and the importance
that teachers give to the acquisition of these skills for the future
professional performance of these.
And later, using the Mann-Whitney U non-parametric statistical model
(mean comparison test, with a level of significance α = 0.05), it is observed
whether there are significant differences between these results and those
obtained from the opinion of students (Infante-Moro, Infante-Moro &
Gallardo-Pérez, 2019). Parametric methods are discarded because the variables
studied do not have a normal distribution, they do not meet the normality
requirement [Kolmogorov-Smirnov test: asymmetry and kurtosis coefficients other
than 0, and asymptotic significance (P-value) less than the level of
significance (α = 0.05)].
3.1.- Domain and importance
of ICT skills
The means in terms of domain
and the importance that teachers give to each of the items that make up the
questionnaire can be seen in the following table (Table 1):
Table 1
Teachers' average assessment of the mastery of ICT skills that students have
and the importance of ICT skills
Source:
Self-made
In these averages calculated for each item, it can be observed that in general
terms the teachers positively value the mastery that their students have in ICT
skills and consider the acquisition of these skills important for their future
professional performance.
Regarding the first variable analyzed, the domain of ICT competencies,
the competency domains in which teachers feel that their students have a lower
level of training (mean values below 6.5, although above 5, in a
scale of 1-10) and that could be considered as “weak points” are:
·
Ability to configure and solve problems that arise related to
hardware, software and network systems to optimize their use for learning and
productivity, corresponding to item 22, with a value of 6.20.
·
Ability to design, create or modify a Wiki (Wikispaces,
Nirewiki,…), corresponding to item 30, with a value of 5.13.
·
And the ability to assume an ethical commitment in the use of
digital information on ICT, including respect for copyright, intellectual
property and the appropriate reference to sources, corresponding to item 32,
with a value of 6.11.
·
On the contrary, the competency domains in which teachers
feel that their students have a higher level of training (mean values greater
than 8.5, on a scale of 1-10) and that could be considered “strengths” are:
·
Ability to use different mobile devices (Smartphone, Tablet,
PDAs, ...), corresponding to item 02, with a value of 9.39.
·
Ability to browse the Internet with different browsers
(Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera,…), corresponding to item
03, with a value of 9.39.
·
Ability to master different office tools for information
processing, such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases, ...,
corresponding to item 04, with a value of 8.85.
·
Ability to communicate with other people using synchronous
communication tools via the Web (chat, instant messaging services, Skype,…),
corresponding to item 07, with a value of 9.09.
·
Effective use of the virtual campus used at the University
(Moodle, WebCt, …) as support for face-to-face teaching, corresponding to item
11, with a value of 9.24.
·
Ability to use digital resources and tools to explore current
world issues and solve real problems, attending to personal, social,
professional needs, etc., corresponding to item 20, with a value of 8.61.
·
Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas to
multiple audiences, using a variety of media and formats, corresponding to item
24, with a value of 9.00.
·
Ability to function in professional networks (LinkedIn,
etc.), corresponding to item 29, with an average of 9.02.
·
And the ability to exhibit a positive attitude towards the
use of ICT to support collaboration, learning and productivity, corresponding
to item 37, with a value of 8.76.
·
The remaining competency domains present values between 6.5
and 8.5, which can be considered satisfactory.
·
Regarding the other variable analyzed, the importance that
teachers give to students acquiring the different competences presented for
their future professional performance, the competences to which teachers give
less importance are:
·
Ability to configure and solve problems that arise related to
hardware, software and network systems to optimize their use for learning and
productivity, corresponding to item 17, with a value of 7.0.
·
And the ability to design, create or modify a Wiki
(Wikispaces, Nirewiki,…), corresponding to item 30, with a value of 6.52.
·
As can be seen, both competencies (22 and 30) coincide with
two of the “weak points” defined in the previous variable referring to the
level of training of the students.
·
On the contrary, the competences to which teachers attach the
greatest importance are:
·
Ability to use different mobile devices (Smartphone, Tablet,
PDA, ...), corresponding to item 02, with a value of 9.5.
·
Mastery of different office automation tools for information
processing, such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases, etc.
corresponding to item 04, with an average of 9.96. This being the most
important competence for teachers.
·
Efficient use of the virtual campus used at the University
(Moodle. WebCt,…) as support for face-to-face teaching, corresponding to item
11, with a value of 9.63.
·
Ability to identify relevant information by evaluating
different sources and their origin, corresponding to item 14, with a value of
9.61.
·
Ability to assume an ethical commitment in the use of ICT
digital information, including respect for copyright, intellectual property and
the appropriate reference of sources, corresponding to item 32, with a value of
9.5.
·
Ability to promote and practice the safe, legal and
responsible use of information and ICT, corresponding to item 33, with a value
of 9.55.
·
And the ability to adapt to new situations and technological
environments, corresponding to item 43, with a value of 9.59.
·
In this case, it can be observed how three of the seven
competences considered most important coincide with the previous “strong
points” (items 02, 04 and 43) and as one of those considered most important
coincides with one of the “weak points” ( item 32).
In summary, the following figure shows the averages of the teachers'
assessment of the domain and the importance of each of the competencies (Figure
1).

importance of ICT skills

3.2. Differences with
respect to the opinion of their students
Now, although it is true that the results obtained are quite positive, as
happened in those obtained by the students (Infante-Moro, Infante-Moro &
Gallardo-Pérez, 2019), here are significant differences in the level of mastery
of the competences corresponding to items 02, 03, 04, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 12,
16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29, 31, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41
and 42, being the teachers the ones who give a higher value to these (Table 2).

the perspective of the teaching staff and that of the students
Source: Self-made based on the results obtained here and those obtained in the study by A. Infante-Moro, J. C. Infante-Moro and J. Gallardo-Pérez (2019)
The same occurs when assessing the importance given to the acquisition of
these competences for the future professional performance of the students by
the teachers and the students themselves, where it can be observed that again
the values are quite high. positive, but significant differences are found
again in the degree of importance of their acquisition (items 04, 05, 06, 09,
10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35,
36, 38, 39, 40, 41 and 42), being again the teachers who give the highest
evaluation to these (Table 3).

4. Conclusions
The acquisition of ICT skills has a relevant role in the training
programs of educational institutions, since these skills are among the most
demanded when companies decide to look for workers, because they require
technological tools in most cases to perform many of its functions. For this
reason, it is necessary to carry out an analysis to know the training in ICT
skills that students have according to the teachers and see if there are
differences with the importance that teachers give to the acquisition of ICT
skills for the future professional performance of their students, checking
whether or not they are at the level that is required from the labor market in
these, and to know if this importance and mastery in these competences that teachers
want to transmit to their students coincide with the importance that students
give to the acquisition of these competences already your domain, checking if
corrective action should be taken.
In this specific case, the analysis focuses on students from the Faculty
of Business Sciences and Tourism of the University of Huelva (Spain), where the
degrees of "Business Administration and Management", "Finance
and Accounting" and " Tourism ”, and it can be observed in the
results that in general terms the teachers positively value the mastery that
their students have in ICT skills, although in some of them they do have to
advance a little more to reach the levels demanded by the importance that
teachers give to the acquisition of each of these for the future professional
performance of these students. Among these competencies in which they must
advance are: the ability to investigate and solve problems in systems and
applications (configure email, configure antivirus, defragment the hard disk,
...), the ability to identify relevant information evaluating different sources
and their provenance, the ability to organize, analyze and ethically use
information from a variety of sources and media, the ability to use graphic
organizers and software to create conceptual and mental maps (CmapTool, Mindomo
, ...), diagrams or diagrams, to present the relationships between ideas and
concepts, the ability to plan searches for information to solve problems, the
ability to analyze the capabilities and limitations of ICT resources, the
ability to assume an ethical commitment in the use of digital information and
ICT, including respect for copyright, intellectual property and reference
adequate knowledge of sources, and the ability to promote and practice the
safe, legal and responsible use of information and ICT.
Even so, it can be said that students have the necessary knowledge in ICT
to face the passage to the world of work. Sufficient training in these ICT
skills is appreciated, obtaining generally high average values for
all the items presented, except for the competence regarding the ability to
configure and solve problems that arise related to hardware, software and
network systems for optimize its use for learning and productivity, the
competence regarding the ability to design, create or modify a Wiki; for which
students show training needs, and the competence regarding the ability to
assume an ethical commitment in the use of digital information on ICT,
including respect for copyright, intellectual property and the appropriate
reference to the sources, with two of these three coinciding with the
competences that teachers attach less importance to for their future
professional performance.
The degree of these assessments provided by the teachers regarding the
domain does differ in many of these items due to those provided by the
students, significant but not very large differences (and always higher in the
assessment of the teachers), something that also coincides in assessing
importance. This reflects that students really have a superior command of these
ICT competences than they think and that despite the fact that they know and
highly value the importance of each of these competences, they still do not
reach the importance that teachers they see that they must have these (although
quite a few similes).
In general terms, these students give high importance to obtaining these
ICT skills, as observed in the study by Infante-Moro, Infante-Moro and
Gallardo-Pérez (2019). However, he has not yet reached the degree that his
teachers want to convey to him. And with respect to the domain of these, it can
be said that it goes in parallel to this high importance that they give and
they receive from their teachers (except for some competence that shows a
training need).
The analysis of the perceptions of the faculty of the Faculty of Business
Sciences and Tourism of the University of Huelva (Spain) on ICT competences
gives a new vision of the phenomenon, adding it to the perceptions of the
students, providing information on what is the degree of compe - ICT skills of
current students in this Faculty, but it would also be necessary to delve into
another aspect such as the perspective of companies, that is, the opinion of
employers on the degree of mastery in these competences that they possess
workers and the importance that employers give to possessing these skills to
enter the labor market. This study should also be extended to other Faculties
and other degrees.
Future workers must be trained in the knowledge and use of new
technologies, competencies evaluated through this questionnaire and whose
results show that the study plans have been able to promote the learning of
these ICT competences over the years of learning in this Faculty. In addition
to being able to relativize the acquisition of these for the future work
performance of their students, seeing the importance that they give to them and
the similarity that exists with the degree of importance that teachers want to
give to these skills.

competencias a adquirir (Infante-Moro, Infante-Moro, Martínez-López &
García-Ordaz, 2016).
Roig-Vila, Mengual-Andres & Maseda, 2017), sistemas tutoriales inteligentes
(Pedroza, González, Guerrero, Collazos & Lecona, 2018), serious games
(González Calleros, Guerrero García & Navarro Rangel, 2019), redes sociales
(León-Gómez, Calderón-Garrido & Gil-Fernández, 2019; González Pérez, 2018;
por la International Society for Tecnology in Education (ISTE), y ratificado
Tecnología Educativa pertenecientes a universidades españolas y
seleccionan y usan aplicaciones efectiva y productivamente (ítems 04, 06, 07,
producir trabajos originales o resolver problemas (ítem 27).
·
significativos a nivel académico.
Z2 x N x p x q
n = ——————————
= 46
E²(N-1) + Z2 x p x q
Donde: n = Tamaño de la muestra;
9,39.
·
Capacidad para navegar por Internet con diferentes
navegadores (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera,…),
correspondiente al ítem 03, con un valor de 9,39.
·
atendiendo a necesidades personales, sociales, profesionales, etc., correspondiente
al ítem 20, con un valor de 8,61.
·
Capacidad de comunicar de manera efectiva información e ideas
a múltiples audiencias, usando variedad de medios y formatos, correspondiente
al ítem 24, con un valor de 9,00.
·

07, 08, 09, 10, 12, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29, 31, 34, 35, 36,
37, 38, 39, 40, 41 y 42, siendo los profesores los que dan una mayor valoración
a éstas (Tabla 2).

11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36,
38, 39, 40, 41 y 42), siendo de nuevo los profesores los que dan una mayor
valoración a éstas (Tabla 3).

darles a dichas competencias.
