Las relaciones entre Canadá y la UE en el contexto del nuevo regionalismo

En el marco de la economía política internacional del regionalismo, las relaciones entre Canadá y la Unión Europea se han visto influenciadas por la participación de Canadá en el Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN) desde 1992. Aunque los datos empíricos son insuficientes para determinar con precisión cómo afectaron a las relaciones mutuas los respectivos procesos de integración regional, es constatable a lo largo de la década la pérdida de intensidad de los intercambios comerciales bilaterales, al tiempo que las inversiones canadienses en Europa y las europeas en Canadá aumentaron ininterrumpidamente. Lo limitado de estas relaciones bilaterales se explica en parte por la importancia secundaria del mercado europeo para Canadá en comparación con el mercado estadounidense; pero si las relaciones económicas entre Canadá y la UE no se han intensificado en mayor medida ha sido
simplemente por falta de voluntad por parte de los respectivos responsables políticos. Sin embargo, desde 1996 se han desarrollado los mecanismos de cooperación institucionalizada que permitirían la intensificación de las relaciones políticas y económicas UE-Canadá.
