¿Promesas incumplidas? Un balance crítico de las teorías del cambio político y su aplicabilidad en América Latina.

El presente artículo oferece un análisis crítico de los diversos enfoques teóricos que, desde mediados de siglo XX hasta la fecha, han intentado interpretar las vías por las que los países del subcontinente americano tenían que transitar para alcanzar la democracia y el desarrollo económico. En un inicio se describen y cuestionan las teorías de primera generación (o teorías desarrollistas) y de segunda generación (o teorías de la dependencia). Posteriormente se enfatiza el impacto intelectual que tuvo la irrupción de los procesos de transición hacia la democracia en diversas latitudes de América Latina y la aparición de teorías de medio alcance que querían exponer la racionalidad de tales acontecimientos. Finalmente, se apuntan algunos de los retos que se enfrentan los enfoques más recientes sobre consolidacióndemocrática a la luz del itinerario teórico expuesto a lo largo del trabajo.
