Una traducción al castellano de “The Manufacturers” (1809) de Maria Edgeworth

Abstract

Durante el siglo dieciocho y diecinueve aparecieron en España un gran número de traducciones, directas o indirectas, de diversos autores británicos. La narrativa de autoría femenina destinada al público juvenil tuvo entonces un papel destacado y su traslación al castellano contribuyó a popularizar a escritoras que triunfaban en Europa y América. En este artículo se realiza el análisis translémico de un texto fechado en 1877 y que no ha sido estudiado hasta el momento, “Los dos fabricantes”, de una de las autoras más importantes de Gran Bretaña en el período previctoriano, la angloirlandesa Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849). El relato original, “The Manufacturers”, aparecía dentro de la colección PopularTales (1804). Aquí nos interesa presentar las características esenciales de la escritura de Edgeworth y estudiar los rasgos principales del texto meta teniendo en cuenta los elementos contemplados en la teoría de los polisistemas literarios de Itamar Even-Zohar (1990), el contexto cultural y los procedimientos utilizados en la traducción al castellano.

ABSTRACT: A great number of direct and indirect translations of diverse British authors appeared in Spain during the eighteenth and the nineteenth century. Narratives written by women for the young people had a prominent role, and their translation into Spanish helped to popularise some women writers who succeeded in Europe and America. This article offers the translemic analysis of a text dating from 1877 and which has not been studied so far, “Los dos fabricantes”, by one of the most important pre-Victorian British authoress, the Anglo-Irish Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849). The original text, “The Manufacturers”, appeared in the collection PopularTales (1804). Here we will introduce the most relevant characteristics of Edgeworth’s writing and study the main features of the target text taking into account the elements included in Itamar Even-Zohar’s theory of the literary polysystems (1990), the cultural context and the procedures used in the Spanish translation.
