Contextual mismatches in the translation into spanish of Ernest Hemingway’s <i>The sun also rises</i>

Resumen

Desde la perspectiva de la teoría de la relevancia de Sperber y Wilson, se analiza aquí la última traducción al español de la novela de Ernest Hemingway The Sun Also Rises. Tomando como punto de partida el concepto de contexto se distinguen cuatro contextos diferentes: el contexto previsto por Hemingway, el aportado por el traductor como lector del texto original, el previsto por el traductor como escritor de un nuevo texto en español y, finalmente, el contexto aportado por el lector de la traducción. Las asimetrías que se dan entre los distintos contextos dan lugar a casos de clara falta de correspondencia entre el original y la traducción. El artículo intenta mostrar que el concepto de contexto de Sperber y Wilson puede explicar las causas de las principales deficiencias de una traducción literaria y, por tanto, proporcionar ciertas pautas que sean de utilidad para los traductores profesionales. Abstract Contextual Mismatches in the Translation into Spanish of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises José Gabriel RODRÍGUEZ PAZOS The last translation into Spanish of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises is analysed here from the perspective of Sperber and Wilson's theory of relevance. Taking their concept of context as a starting point, four different contexts are considered: the context envisaged by Hemingway, the one brought to bear by the translator as reader of the original, the one envisaged by the translator as writer of the Spanish version, and, finally, the context brought to bear by the reader of the translated text. Mismatches between the different contexts result into cases of very apparent lack of correspondence between the original and the translation. The article tries to show that Sperber and Wilson's concept of context can account for the causes of the main deficiencies of a literary translation and, consequently, provide some useful guidelines for professional translators.
