Las ecologías anticapitalistas de Derek Mahon

Resumen

La crítica literaria generalmente ha presentado a Derek Mahon como un humanista en diálogo con temas existencialistas, o como un poeta del exilio, al tiempo que destaca las cualidades de ironía y escepticismo que impregnan su obra. Este artículo es receptivo a tales lecturas, pero propone un énfasis alternativo, situando a Mahon como un escritor anticapitalista, sus aventuras poéticas a menudo sirviendo para criticar y contrarrestar lo que él llamó “el manicomio de la fuerza adquisitiva / Que nos gobierna, y gobernaría el mundo” (2018ª: 59). Esta discusión examina el respeto de larga data de Mahon por una variedad de poetas y pensadores anticapitalistas, desde Brecht y Pasolini hasta Naomi Klein; arroja luz sobre sus penetrantes investigaciones sobre la guerra y el despojo ecológico como vástagos de la expansión imperial y capitalista; y explora su defensa de la poesía como un correctivo a lo que él veía como el comercialismo simplista y las complacencias intelectuales que acompañan a la globalización impulsada por el mercado, o en sus palabras, “el crecimiento explosivo de las altas finanzas / que determinan la dirección del pensamiento” (2020h: 67). A lo largo de este artículo, mi objetivo es que pueda verse emerger un “nuevo” Mahon: a saber, el poeta cuya autodenominación de “izquierda” informó y encontró expresión en su obra y práctica (2017d: 82).

Ciarán O'Rourke, Trinity College Dublin

A Trinity Scholar, Ciarán O’Rourke received his PhD from Trinity College Dublin in 2019. Since then, his articles have appeared in the academic journals, American Studies in Scandinavia, Ex-Centric Narratives, and The William Carlos Williams Review. He was awarded the Walter Scott Peterson Prize 2019 by the William Carlos Williams Society for his article, «Pictures from Jutland: Placing the Poetries of Seamus Heaney and William Carlos Williams». A widely published poet, his two collections, The Buried Breath (2018) and Phantom Gang (2022), are available from The Irish Pages Press. He blogs at www.ragpickerpoetry.net.
