Abstract

ABSTRACT The present research work in industrial design methodology focuses on the conceptual design phase, using mind maps as a tool for creativity in search of new product features, transforming the existing solutions in nature. The methodology applies biomimetics as a tool, creates new opportunities and relates different design tools such as functional analysis and creativity techniques. The biomimetic design makes the product more creative and differentiated, with innovative features based on analogies from the natural environment. The approach is prospective to define key functions and to use a method that relates these functions to biological solutions. The improvement is due to the integration of intermediate phases, with methods that determine the key features and natural reference that provide successful solutions. Product concepts are obtained based on design specifications as defined by the functions and alternative solutions found in the process. The diversity of solutions in nature raises conceptual development alternatives. The method described is distinguished by the pursuit of functional benefits and by an exploratory way that results in novel solutions.
