Abstract

This paper presents a fuzzy logic approach to the traditional model of solid flame to estimate the thermal radiation in hydrocarbon fires. The fuzzy set theory is a mathematical tool designed to model complex systems in uncertain environments so it can contribute, complementing the traditional model, to facilitate the treatment of uncertainty and imprecision associated with this type of accidents. The model input variables are treated as fuzzy sets and output variables are estimated through a knowledge base which incorporates the subjective interpretation done by experts. Given the number of variables and processes involved is analyzed using a hierarchical fuzzy inference system to connect the various basic systems of inference. The proposed approach is applied to three oil fire experiments, performed with different-sized fires, studying the fit of data and evaluating the differences between the predicted and observed values.
