Abstract

ABSTRACT: We present a guide for calculating CO2 emissions from maritime transport of a product. The guide is useful for companies who want to know the carbon footprint of their products. We have reviewed the literature on methodologies for calculating CO2 emissions. The aim of methods found is, generally calculating emission inventories in a territory for a year. When attempted to adapt these methodologies to calculate emissions attributable to a particular product we found several difficulties related to the lack of information about the emission sources. The methodology proposed in this paper shows what these difficulties and provides a guide to treat them properly. The novelty of this guide are: raises six stages to perform the calculation, is independent of the amount of CO2 emission sources, shows the most critical aspects of the calculation and the calculation result is the amount emitted per unit of product. The guide has been used by the port of Barcelona for studies related to CO2 emissions. In this paper we describe two cases of using the guide.
