Abstract

ABSTRACT: Abbás Ibn Firnás was an andalusi engineer, alchemist and poet. He born in Ronda (Málaga) in 810 A.C. but lived in the court of Cordoba along all his life, in service of three omeyas emirs. Although he developed different interesting mechanical devices and introduced advances in different manufacturing processes, nowdays his figure is not studied in the frame of the History of Machines and Mechanism (HMM). Authors have not found other papers, in the field of HMM, about Firnas. So present paper pretends to be the first work in to collect and to present all the existing information about the engineering facet of Ibn Firnas and in to evaluate his weight in the HMM. Keywords: history of the machines, history of the mechanisms, theory of machines and mechanisms, Abbas Ibn Firnas, MMS, TMM.
