Abstract

This article aims to analyze comparatively the economic efficiency of the investments to improve energy management that are carried out in industrial companies. To this end the case of the organizations that have adopted a ISO 50001 based Energy Management System is analyzed. In order to carry out the research a field work based on hybrid methodology was used, that combines, on the one hand, a quantitative study based on a survey to all ISO 50001 certified Spanish organizations, along with a case study carried out in six Spanish companies. The results evidenced that most of the organizations that belong to industries with high energy consumption invest more in order to get ISO 50001 but also have a return on investment much clearer than companies from other sectors. Therefore, it seems advisable that industrial companies implement and develop an Energy Management System in order to improve competitiveness, as the costs associated with energy consumption are substantively reduced.
