Abstract

Sensing systems based on energy harvesting are very attractive for users and developers given their energy independence and connectivity with other nodes that have internet access. This article discusses some of the basic considerations for the design of self-powered, ambient energy based systems. Among these aspects are ultra-low power consumption of the components used, the software design and the circuit board design among others. A practical application example is given. Finally, it is discussed the way in which energy harvesting technology and ultra- low-power electronics can promote the development of the Internet of things, showing its technological relevance for the future.
