El diseño universal aplicado a los jardines y parques terapéuticos. Los entornos hospitalarios como caso de estudio

Al contacto del hombre con la naturaleza, tanto en su estado menos alterado como modificada a través de la construcción de los paisajes, como adaptada a sus ideas y necesidades en la proximidad de los huertos y de los jardines, se le han reconocido desde la Antigüedad unos efectos beneficiosos sobre la salud del cuerpo y del espíritu. Sin embargo, hasta la primera mitad del siglo XIX no hubo evidencias empíricas que vincularan la salud pública con las condiciones higiénicas y de habitabilidad de las ciudades y de los edificios, y las acciones que se han ido acometiendo a escala urbana y arquitectónica se dirigían en esta dirección. El objetivo de lograr espacios urbanos y arquitectónicos para el bienestar supone un avance significativo respecto a los objetivos de salubridad o de confort, pues al situar a los usuarios en el centro del proyecto, sus necesidades individuales pasan al primer plano. La aplicación de estas estrategias de diseño universal a los jardines vinculados a los centros asistenciales ha requerido una revisión de los antecedentes, de las directrices vigentes y de los ejemplos construidos; y han sido el objetivo de dos proyectos de investigación competitivos cuyos resultados son un sistema de información del hospital y una Guía de buenas prácticas de aplicación general, tanto para los jardines hospitalarios como para los jardines públicos urbanos.
