Abstract

The paper analyzes the historiographical proposal of Linguistics in Britain: Personal Histories, a book published by the Philological Society of London in 2002. The title collects the intellectual autobiography of twenty British linguists and condenses the history of the twentieth century in the United Kingdom. This text combines personal memories, professional debates and manifestos for a meaningful and inclusive linguistics. The article considers the value of this unusual contribution, relates the book to the principles of historiography and highlights the stories of Halliday, Lyons and Robins.
