Abstract

The article shows the contribution that the forest makes as an eco-touristic resource to the development of a mountain area. It also investigates the factors and agents that play a part in this process. We consider the case of Mig Pallars, a Catalonian sub-district. A LIFE Programme, financed by the European Union and set to promote sustainable forest management and tourism was developed in the early 1990s. In 2003 most of the Mig Pallars territory was included in the newly-created Alt Pirineu Natural Park. Our case study shows the increasing role played by ecotourism, promoted by both local public agencies and private firms.
